Prepare For The Worst

2 weeks back, AkiraSabine(A.S) decided to work on the video she promised to share with all of you. If you haven’t known which that is, read on here.

So, she hooked her external hard disk to her netbook and started assessing.

“The drive is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?”

Huh?

She unhooked and tried hooking it back.

“The drive is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?”

“What crap?” she thought.  “What have I done? “

It has been more than 2 stressful weekends and weekday nights too, after work that she tried every resources she could to salvage her data. It was more than 300 GB of data in the 500GB hard disk drive.
Yes, OMG, right?

She knows. You’re right. She should have had her precious files backed up right? She doesn’t mind losing the movie files, e-book files but NO, she can’t afford losing her pictures, videos and foreign music from her wanders of the last 2 years. Dang!!

The so-called computer service shops are no good at doing what they’re supposed to do. A.S doesn’t know how much effort he put in into salvaging her data but he said he found nothing. Or it may be the software he used was not doing the job but why couldn’t he try others she recommended. Didn’t have the license? Or didn’t want to entertain is more like it. As the external HDD is still under warranty, he offered to change into a new one.

“The data part, sorry, I’ve tried my best. If the data is so important that you need to see data recovery service, you may have to think twice. It will cost by thousands of Ringgit to recover a 500GB hard disk.
Anyways, upon own research together with advice from some techie friends and many hours of running nearly every software available, she bought a Data Rescue PC 3 but how on earth can Avira trace a TR Dropper in the installer file. She’s so going to return that product. Then, she found one which works reasonably well as it shows preview of her dear pictures and videos. Recover My Files, you’re a gem.  Finally, something that works!

At the point of typing, A.S is still spending her time recovering and transferring her files to a storage in another PC. What a time consuming job when you haven’t got enough hard disk space in the netbook and another 500GB handy.

Sorry that you have to listen to her rant in this post. This entire thing has been sucking a lot of her time and effort to the point that sometimes, she thought, is it worth crying over spilt milk or just let it be and be happy. This is really tiring and mind boggling especially when you’ve the computer running overnight to find out the next morning that those softwares are not retrieving anything and you got even more worried if it even damage the files further.

Enough of ranting. Happy to have settled upon something that works! Happy to pay for a software that works. She shall get another hard disk to back up all these files even though she’s not done editing and deleting bad pictures or videos.  This is a complete nightmare A.S does not want repeating.

NZ: Bad Beginning to a New Year

A.S opened her eyes. Yes, she was to go across to South Island today. Next to her was her German roommate still sound asleep. Reaching for her phone, looking into it, she could not believe her eyes. It was 15 minutes to 8.30 a.m. Normally it did not mean anything but, TODAY, Jan 1st, 2012, at 8.30 a.m, is her boarding time!!! OMG OMG OMG..! She was not going to make it! She knew it. But, she had to, no matter what!!

Scrambling out of the bed, and as she gathered her things together, she blamed herself. Why didn’t she pack them yesterday?! She was part of the in-house new year countdown party last night, but she did  not remember counting any down. Why, and how did she doze off into bed just like that? Not even her alarm was set! “How stupid when you knew you’ll have an early morning the next day. You wanted to leave the house at 7am and now what, it’s 8.15 a.m you woke up to!!”

True enough, getting a taxi on the first day of the year was totally out of the question. She didn’t make it. There was a huge feeling of remorse. At least, she could heave a sigh of relief when she found out later that she could board a later ferry at no extra charge. So, it went well after all …. to just getting across the straits to Picton Harbour, the gateway into South Island.

Arriving at 5p.m, it was considered early to get a ride but again, the first day of 2012 did not treat her well. She had no luck with the 2 hours’ ride to Kaikoura that same evening. It got dark and she thought to herself, ‘Well..well, is this what the coming 2 months in South Island is going to be?”  It seemed to her that South Island especially here in Picton was so much less populated compared to the North Island which she’d spent the last 4 months in, and getting a ride was just downright pathetic. There was no time for self pity. So, she spent an unplanned night in Picton. The hostel was pretty good, though.

She had to get to Kaikoura by 5.30am the next morning. There was no way it was going to be possible. It’s going to be a  2 hours’ drive from Picton and that meant leaving Picton at 3am?? She had no car and had no one to rely on for transportation. No way!! Argghhh!!! Dang!

The next morning, after 2 rides, first with a Korean driver with 2 other Israeli and the next ride, with a pair of young Asian-Kiwi couple, she finally arrived at the lovely coastal town of Kaikoura at 1pm. She had missed her long awaited  booked activity…. SOB BIG TIME!!!! Dashed was her dream to swim with the school of dolphins!! SOB BIG TIME!!! WAHHH!!! No refunds too!!

Unwilling to give up, she signed up for an alternative activity with Encounter Kaikoura.
Unfortunately, no more dolphins dream, this time, but …. (up next, a post with an exciting video clip…)

There was supposed to be something on for the countdown last night...

Too late to save the earlier ferry departure.
Killing time here as A.S spent her last few hours in
Wellington, North Island.Coffee and many reminiscences till 1pm before walking to the harbour.
What a quiet NZ capital on a morning of the new year.

Tired of the inside..
It's time to join others for the sights, sounds, breeze, and fresh air.

Finally arrived, err.. to a small harbour in Picton town.
So many people and so many cars, and yet, they were either fully
occupied or  none were heading her way.

Upon arrival in Kaikoura, came right here only to confirm bad news.

Why A.S Likes Couchsurfing (CS)

  1. Save travelling costs
Before AkiraSabine(A.S) knew about CS, she stayed in dorm rooms of backpackers hostels. She shared a bunk bed with another traveller and the same room with many other guys and girls. CS opens up opportunities to either sleep on a host’s guestroom or couch in the living room. She’s not required to pay. All she needs to do is, send a personal request, make arrangements and be a respectful guest.

  1. Make local friends
To A.S, it’s bbbooorrring arriving at a place, stay in hotels, sightsee with your tour group and joining other tourists at tourist spots. Getting to know someone where she visits is so much more meaningful. Immediately, it makes her feel like she belongs there as she gets first hand account of any topics she wishes to know.

  1. Visit places unknown to travel guides
A.S was shown places unknown to the mass in her surfing experiences. This meant she could try authentic local delicacies. Instead of being surrounded by tourists, she was surrounded by locals and she felt stardom. These are food served by the locals for the locals’ taste bud. How more authentic can it be? Among other activities are hiking places where the locals work out, secluded beach/ hot pools, lake swims and bike rides.

  1. Practise new languages
Often times, she takes the opportunity to practise more German and Japanese with her hosts. They may not necessarily be native speakers but often times, she’s the worse speaker. When she was in Spain, she picked up some essential Spanish words from her hosts.

  1. Learn new skills
A.S may be selective when she selected her host. She finds something that the host and her both have in common. This helps to bring conversations alive and plan more activity times together. Yes, it’s true, both of us may be strangers to each other and that we both like traveling and that’s why we’re in this community. However, if there’re more we could relate to, that would be perfect. Say...you like tennis. Yay, you click with A.S! You would like your guest to spend some time playing with you when he/she surfs your place. There are many talented CSers out there. A.S is always keen to learn from expert tennis players, swimmers, dancers, bakers, guitar players, language experts, online marketers and public speakers.

  1. Opportunity to cook for new friends
This is something she enjoys doing as a surfer. She has to admit that she seldom cook for herself as her diet is pretty simple but cooking is a way to show appreciation to her hosts. She may say she’s polished her skills in terms of cooking stir fried noodle to introduce her hosts to typical Malaysian flavour.

  1. Join group activities
Through CS, one do not just host or surf. They can also participate in local events. Often times, there are events like hiking trips, road trips, parties, celebrations, picnics or checking out some festivals together. For locals, it’s a good opportunity to mingle and make new friends outside your social circle. For surfers, it’s a good time to meet other travellers you may eventually travel together with.

  1. Travelling without leaving home
As a host, CSing is a good opportunity to travel without leaving home. A.S gets to enjoy an international environment, practise a foreign language and enjoys a foreign flavour when she hosts someone. She may also choose to meet them up for coffee and show them around the city too.

  1. Learn about her home country
Being a host prompts her to discover her home country or hometown, to be specific. ‘I don’t know’ is an honest answer when she doesn’t have an answer but too much of it sounds quite pathetic. Thus, A.S has learnt to discover her own country like  a traveller would, so as she can be of good help whenever needs arise. She is currently looking up for interesting places her future guests can visit, flavours they should not miss, costless activities, transportations to get around, festivals and things authentically Malaysian which she has not seen in her travels in USA, EU, NZ and the few Asian countries she’s visited.

"Any points you would like to add, fellow CSers out there?
You guys are most welcomed to share your points as comments!
Many thanks in advance."

Sincerely,
A.S.

NZ: Why A.S likes doing Help Exchange

Are you traveling long term?
Do you want to stay in a place for at least one week to better known the place and the people?
Do you think that you’ve simply spent too much on your travels that you’d like to keep your spending to a minimum for at least a week?
Do you also concur that traveling presents opportunities to learn new skills and satisfy the inquisitive mind?

If you answered YES to all the questions above, WWOOF-ing and HelpX-ing are the answers for you.
Basically, these 2 offer help exchange opportunities, which means a budget traveller can  work in exchange for accommodation and food.

Back to the post title,

Why A.S likes doing Help Exchange

  1. Opportunity to experience the place at a minimal cost
The idea of helping in exchange for accommodation and food definitely saves cost while a traveller stays put at a place a little longer. To A.S, it is not just mere accommodation. It’s an overall experience. So far, she got to taste local homecooked food, lived the life of the locals in their homes, biked around the neighbourhood and whenever she was lucky, she had the opportunity to use the car too.

  1. Working and living in an international environment
It’s amazing how people who just got to know each other lived in the same house, shared work time, cooked together, did the dishes together, played games together, explored the place together and celebrated a festival together. Even though it could be as short as 1 week, A.S always left with fond memories.

  1. Opportunities to come close with animals
Dealing with animals may not be A.S’s favourite kind of job but it was a new experience feeding the chickens and ducks. It was also a good opportunity to watch the dogs herd the sheep as well as observing the antics of the birds, cattle, sheep and rabbits.

  1. Learn new skills
She learnt that sheep actually have long tails, on how to drive a wagon, build a mulch garden, set up the irrigation system for a new garden, prepare local food and practise the local language/slang. In fact, earlier, A.S wrote about her experience helping at a vineyard.

  1. Eat healthy organic produce
These hosts are normally self sufficient when it comes to food. They rear their own chickens for eggs and plant their own veggies and herbs for daily use. Thus, it is organically and nutritiously assured. What A.S likes most are the fresh herbs and the abundance of mouthwatering fruits.

  1. Live simple life and marvel at the beauty of mother nature
A daily life started with doing 3 or 4 hours of outdoor work followed by the rest of the day free. Most hosts allow usage of bikes to explore the place. A.S personally feels that when she’s deprived of techies or other commitments, she tends to notice how wonderful mother nature is. Simple things like swimming in the lake, picnicking at the park, feeling the breeze blowing on her face as she cycles and gazing at the millions of stars at the otherwise dark sky easily complements the day.

  1. Can forget about packing and unpacking for a week or two
Hosts in these WWOOF or HelpX sites normally look for someone who can stay and help for at least 1 week. To A.S, this one week presents a good opportunity to rest the tired feet as well as taking a break from constant planning. Moreover, leaving the packing and unpacking aside for this one week is definitely a bonus.

Phew!! Finally, this is up and going! Enjoy!

NZ: A.S's Top 5 Free Things To Do in Turangi

When one speaks of The Great Walks in NZ, among the popular ones definitely has to be The Tongariro Alpine Crossing in Turangi, North Island. Many are here for this hike and stay for just a night in this small town, but if you are here longer, like A.S, you may want to try these free activities out to better know this place.

1. Tongariro Alpine Crossing
Feel free to check an earlier post out about this great walk. In fact, it is not a mere walk but rather a hike.

2. Tongariro National Park
It seems that Tongariro was the first national park to be established in New Zealand and the fourth in the world. Amazing! This stunning wilderness is a dual World Heritage area, one for its association with Maori culture and the other, for its amazing natural attributes. Again, the video in an earlier post, though only covers the area of the walk/ hike, is enough to take just anyone’s breath away.

3. The Tongariro National Trout Centre
Four kilometres south of Turangi on State Highway 1, there is a trout centre run by the Department of Conservation(DoC). The objective is to raise awareness of the importance of the Taupo trout fishery and freshwater conservation in NZ. Picnicking and wandering through the DOC is free.  However, a minimal fee of NZD 10 for an adult is charged for the entrance which includes the Visitor Centre Museum, Genesis Energy Fresh Water Aquarium, Hatchery, Underwater Viewing Chamber, Children's Pond, River and Bush Walk. Visit the official website for more information.

4. Walking
Popular walks in the area include the Tongariro River Loop Track (1hr), the Te Ponanga Saddle (15mins return), Lake Rotopounamu (2hrs) which is famous for its birdlife, and the Tongariro River Walkway (3hrs return). Walks information can be obtained from the Turangi I-Site. The tracks along the walks are in fact, well marked too.

5. Fishing
Tongariro River is a popular spot for anglers. The best months for brown trout are February to March, while June to September is good for rainbow trout. All anglers require a fishing license. If you have no idea how to fish, like A.S, and just want to tag along and take a look, feel free to go to the river and look out for anglers to tag along with. They may be happy to have you following and watching them but watch your steps too. At some points, they may walk into and stand in the water.

Alas, A.S and friend  didn't stay long enough to cheer for the catch.

Post publishing addition
"Opps, the video title should read Tongariro River Walk instead."

A.S's Top 20 Things To Do in NZ (revisited)

Following is a copy of this original list prepared for the 6 months Working Holidays in NZ last year. Hopefully, it gives you a rough idea of planning what to do while you're there so as you do not miss them. A.S knows the pain of arriving at a new city and then going, "Oh, I was there and I didn't do it!" or "Are you sure that I could have done it cheaper where I was?" or worse, when you're finally done and flew home, "What a waste, I didn't do it when I was in NZ."

Let's see how many 'YES!' now that she is done with NZ.

NZ's Great Walk: The Tongariro Alpine Crossing

One day on Facebook...

A.S: I think I'm going to just skip doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Hiking on stony tracks is not something for my feet.

Immediately, friends responded...

Friend A: You must be kidding me. That's the best tramp I've ever done in NZ. You just have to do it. I'm sure you won't regret it.

A.S: Really?? Aren't there much nicer ones in the South Island, especially those with glaciers and snowy peaks.

Friend A: Yes, there are but to me, Tongariro is still topping my list.

Friend B: Seriously, do it, A.S!! Come on, it's the greatest walk in NZ. It's just breathtaking! It's not difficult, don't worry!

A.S: Yeah, I'd love to but it's too stony, I don't think I have the best footwear for it.  My leg hurts and I'm having blisters too on my toes. The weather's not too good. It's been rainy. Don't you think that it's a waste to hike up there and see nothing?

But in the end, she was glad that she made it! Yay, yay, yay!!! Sure enough, according to the weather forecast from I-site, Monday was a good day for the hike and yes, she found herself returning to bright sunny weather after the  4 days spent in Napier.
